When someone has a strong sexual affinity for amputees, it's known as acrotomophilia. It is derived from the Greek terms philia, which means love, tomos, which means "a cut," and Akron, which indicates extremity.

Amelotatism is another word for acrotomophilia, and devotees are another term for acrotomophiles. While some acrotomophiles are female, the majority are male.

Acrotomophiles generally prefer sexual partners with leg amputations over those with arm amputations. Additionally, the majority favour partners who have a post-amputation stump over those who do not and single amputees over double amputees.

Although the term "acrotomophilia" was initially used to refer to a fetish for amputees, it is now used to apply to anyone who has a strong sexual attraction for partners who have any physical impairment, including paralysis or spasticity.

Although the exact cause of acrotomophilia is unknown, some scholars think that this sexual attraction may emerge unconsciously in childhood.

It is essential to distinguish apotemnophilia, which occurs when people become aroused at the prospect of becoming amputees, from acrotomophilia. Teratophilia, a term used to characterize a sexual predilection for people with physical abnormalities, is also associated with this preference.

A lot of acrotomophiles lead contented, healthy lives, particularly when they have partners with disabilities. Treatment for acrotomophiles is uncommon, though it can happen if their imaginations cause compulsive behaviour.
