A BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO STIMULATING THE CLITORIS

Finding (and enjoying) the clitoris doesn't have to be a problematic, mythological quest, even though it could appear to be the X on a treasure map.

The Anatomy of the Clit

It's a frequent cliché that many people (mainly men, let's say) don't know where the clitoris is, let alone how to make the most of its talents, as many online jokes will demonstrate. We'll begin with a real Sex Ed 101 moment: anatomy. You might be surprised to learn how extensive the clitoris is. Only the head of the clitoris is present externally; the majority of it is inside. The entire clitoral organ resembles an inverted wishbone, with the head of the clitoris at its center and two "legs" that run down the pubic bone on either side of the body and a bulb of erectile tissue directly beneath each leg.

"I apologize, did you just say 'erectile tissue?'" is what you're thinking. You'd be right! Like a penis, the clitoris's head and bulbs are composed of erectile tissue, which is made up of hundreds of blood vessels and nerve endings gathered in a tiny space. Tissues swell, and sensations intensify as blood rushes to these regions when you become aroused. When you get aroused, your vulva's labia also swells up to three times its regular size and enlarges with blood. It's the clitoris/vulva equivalent of an erection!

The head of the clitoris, which is the part that is visible and touchable, is situated above the urethral and vaginal openings (where urine exits), inside the labia majora (the vulva's outer lips), and at the top of the junction of the labia minora (the vulva's inner lips). The clitoral hood, a little skin fold that covers the clitoris, can be gently drawn back to provide more direct access to the clitoris. More vivid sensations are made possible by this. (For more location information, see the graphic below.)

The vulva's elemental composition is the same for everyone. However, each person's vulva is different in terms of size and shape. All clitorises and vulvas are different, and each person's unique anatomy is both expected and lovely. These factors do not influence a person's level of sensitivity or capacity for orgasm.

5 Tips for Mind-Blowing Clitoral Play

  • Lube makes everything better.

Everything. We strongly advise keeping your preferred lube available whenever you're going to paddle the pink canoe because it's not just for penetrative sex, and it's far superior to spit. Do you need assistance selecting the best lubricant? Could you take a look at our Lube Guide?

  • The level of stimulation needed/desired differs for everyone.

While some people want constant, intense stimulation, others prefer the most minor, sporadic touch. Play with elements like speed (rapid vs. slow) and pressure (harder vs. gentler), and don't be afraid to experiment to see what works for you. Communicate your preferences to your partner without hesitation.

  • Give it a chance.

It's simple to write off a technique if it doesn't work right away, but sometimes, giving it more time allows nerve endings to react and feelings to become more intense. Avoid giving up too soon.

  • If something doesn't feel good, stop.

The clitoral stimulation golden rule? It's good if it feels good. You can throw out anything else.

  • If pleasuring a partner, be sure to ask for directions!

Let them lead you; you don't need to guess.

12 Ways to Touch the Clitoris

  • Start Somewhere Else

Before approaching the clitoris directly, try licking or caressing the outer thighs and then gently moving inward.

  • Massage & Press

To activate the nerve endings in the clitoris's legs, massage and apply pressure to the outer and inner labia.

  • Cup Them

To enhance feeling and arousal, cup the entire hand over the vulva and massage, push, or vibrate the region.

  • Drop a Beat

Over the clitoris, produce a rhythmic drumming feeling with your hands.

  • Tickle & Graze

Gently tease or graze the clitoris with a feather or a piece of cloth.
